If the ship

was captured without effective resistance

being made the vessel was taken to Bias Bay

and looted of all property of valne on

board, ang wealthy Chinese passengers being

usually detained and held te ransom. What

happened in the event of the pirates fluding

themselves in circunstances which threatened the

success of their operations may be exemplified

by the case of the British ship "sun:ing",

where the officers succeeded in regaining pos-

session of the vessel, which was then set on

fire by the pirates and was only saved from

complete destruction by the opportune arrival of

a British warship. One British officer was

shot and wounded by the pirates, and a BritisÌ2

subject was carried off by them when they left

the vessel in boats.

It is unecessary to give

detailed particulare of a state of affairs which

is, unfortunately, only too notorious, but as

instances of ember in which the victims were
